Telecommuting
Also called e-commuting or working at home, telecommuting is a special arrangement between employees and employers that allow people to work from their home or another place instead of traveling to their normal workplace. Basically, the daily commute is replaced with communication by internet, telephone, fax, video conferencing, private networks, voice over IP and other new and exciting technologies.
Telecommuting can be more cost-effective for many companies. And it's great for the environment because it uses far less energy to run a computer than to run your car. So, as technology continues to make this sort of arrangement more viable, you'll likely notice more and more people taking part. OneThing you can do is inquire about any telecommuting options at your company. If there aren't any, maybe you can advocate for one. Even telecommuting just a few days per month can make a big difference.
